How Can People Live There? The Horrific Yakutian Frost Baffles People Around the World

A deaf-mute family almost froze to death on a road in the Ural. A car with two adults and two children inside broke down on the way to Tyumen. It was almost midnight. The temperature was -27°. They were physically unable to call for help. Their car was already covered in rime when the traffic police noticed their vehicle. The car was sent for repairs and the people warmed up with hot tea. This is a photo from the Sverdlovsk road police.

Even the Western media published a lot of articles about the record frost. "My saliva would freeze into needles that would prick my lips," — says a horrified Washington Post reporter. A journalist from New Zealand said that his fingers almost got frostbitten when they were filming in Yakutia. But the greatest shock to the press was the seemingly frost-resistant locals. School gets canceled only after -50° and markets never cease to work. Moreover, there's always room for beauty.

A Yakut ballerina became the heroine of the British press. Instead of valenki she was wearing pointe shoes. The comments say: "Don't expect them to be bothered by the global warming".

Artem Kol will tell us what bothers them.

- Greetings, Artem.

- Greetings.

- Is the foreign mindset also cracking in the cold?

- Our mindset is cracking in the cold as well, -60° is no joke.

“It's so cold in Russia your eyelashes will freeze.” These are the headlines of the articles about Russia in the foreign media: CNN, BBC, The Independent. The whole world has seen this photo of a Yakut girl. It's being published by all media agencies saying it's -67°C in Siberia but people still live there. Perhaps, foreign journalists don't know how their Russian colleagues work during such frosts.

Vladimir Suzdalov: “It's -50° in the north of the region. According to the forecasters, it'll be freezing till the end of the week. This was Vladimir Suzdalov, our correspondent from Yakutia.

It's — 50° outside and he's following all journalist standards: no hat and no gloves. It seems Yakutia is not afraid of the frost. They claim they are used to such temperatures.

The comments to this video say it's -48° outside and the cyclist's got business to attend to. This boy is eating ice cream wearing just a T-shirt lying on the snow. Also Yakutia.

In Oymyakon, the coldest settlement on earth the so-called pole of cold people are always busy. They've got animals to feed and horses to groom all outside.

"It's 12:00 p.m. in Oymyakon, the temperature is -56°C. It was -60° in the morning".

In 2013, Oymyakon broke the world record: the temperature dropped to -71°. The settlement is located in a unique climate zone where it's always extremely cold in winter and hot in summer.

The unique Yakut frost attracts tourists from all across the globe. The guests are laughing at the frozen food that can be used to hammer nails and are amazed at how boiling water instantly becomes snow. And of course, the brave Chinese travelers who weren't afraid to strip to their underwear at -50°.

Naturally, low temperatures dictate their rules. The emergency regime has been announced in Yakutia. School has been canceled and the emergency services are working in an alarm mode. They don't recommend leaving residential areas on private vehicles. A helicopter group of 100 people is patrolling the area 24/7.

Evgeny Roshin, Yakut department of GU MChS: "We have direct orders to inform the population and have our emergency brigades and all systems ready".

According to weathermen, Yakutia is experiencing a so-called "dry frost" that's sometimes even more dangerous. One might assess the situation inadequately which can lead to hypothermia and frostbite.

Elena Volosyuk, FOBOS Weather Center: "Yakutia has dry arctic air. Its relative humidity is approximately 20-30%, while in the Urals or in Central Russia the humidity is usually three times higher. Our normal rates are 75-80%".

Next week, it's going to be warmer in Yakutia. Thermometers will show the temperature from -35° to -40° which is like a thaw for the locals.

Artem Kol has told us about the cold front.
