The Ukrainian authorities intend to organize another blockade for Crimea. They want to cut off water supply with a new dam built on the border with the peninsula. According to the idea of its creators, the water will be redirected to the south, to the Kherson region. Irina Kuksenkova will tell us about how they reacted in the Crimea.
35 million hryvna, which is more than 75 million rubles, was spent by Ukraine's government to construct the dam. According to the official version, there are several purposes. The first is to cut off the flow of fresh water to Russian Crimea. The second is to establish an irrigation system in the Kherson region.
In fact, experts say, it’s a waste of considerable financial resources, which Ukraine borrows from the West in conditions of a profound economic crisis. This is a very large amount of money, especially given that the Ukrainian economy is currently in a difficult situation, the project is completely meaningless. Officials from Kiev have repeatedly stated that they are very worried about Ukrainian citizens and also about the inhabitants of Crimea, including those with Russian citizenship. As a result, concerns are expressed in the fact that they want to build another dam, so that the water doesn’t get to Crimea.
The supply of fresh water, which had been delivered to Crimea from mainland Ukraine since Soviet times, was blocked by Kiev exactly three years ago, after the inhabitants of the peninsula made their choice in favor of Russia. But along with Crimea, the Kherson region was left without water.
On the peninsula, they solved the problem by developing a desalination system for salt water and explored new underground sources. But Ukrainian farmers admit that they barely survived. For three years, we have been living in a nightmare. When the irrigation season comes, we need to get water from somewhere. They blocked the water and we couldn't irrigate about 5,000 hectares. In addition, this dam is not only a meaningless structure, but also causes serious damage to nature. Artificial intervention in this natural water flow can lead to the draining of the land with a harmful amount of salt in the soil.
But, as the hydrological experts say, the flow capacity along the North Crimean Canal is not that strong to build a dam there. What was shown to us, according to the temporary scheme, is that they constructed this closing dike, which can’t even be called a dam. A dam is a big structure, which requires project management and critical thinking to make it function. There are no problems here. This canal can be blocked collectively, as it was formerly called, using their own resources. There can be no talk about big expenses. In addition to another public lie, the "dam" project also contains an element of corruption. The Kiev authorities have already stated that the money spent is not the final amount.
Now, they need to build infrastructure for the dam. This is an additional 12 million hryvna. A similar project has already been implemented in Ukraine. The "wall" of Arseniy Yatsenyuk. As a result, there is no "wall", 100 million was spent, and Yatsenyuk left for America. This project didn’t bring any results, except for the fact that the money was allocated and stolen. The same awaits the dam project. The news about the dam caused a reaction among the Crimeans. They say that after the Ukrainian nationalists undermined the power transmission lines, there is nothing to be surprised at.
However now, Crimea is fully self-sufficient in electricity and water supply. It also has a clear understanding of how Kiev really cares about the inhabitants of the peninsula.
